2. What causes colour drift in large giclée batches?

Understanding the sources of drift tells you what to control in your supplier specification:

Ink batch variation. Inkjet pigment inks are manufactured in production lots. Even within the same product line, slight variation between lots can produce ΔE 0.8–1.5 shifts in specific hue ranges (particularly yellows and oranges). 4. What does a sample approval process look like for 500 rooms?

A three-round sample approval process is standard for large-volume hotel projects. Projects that compress this to one round have significantly higher re-production rates.

Round 1: Initial proof (Days 1–7). Supplier produces 1–2 pieces on the production substrate, using the calibrated file and the intended ICC profile. The master proof is retained by the supplier for the duration of production and used as the calibration reference for each batch. Delta-E batch report. A spectrophotometer-generated report showing the ΔE value for each measured piece against the master proof. The report shows min, max, and average ΔE, allowing you to confirm that the stated tolerance has been met across the batch. This is the document that turns “we believe the colour is consistent” into “we have measured it and it meets your specification.”

Third-party pre-shipment inspection. For projects above 200 pieces or above $50,000 in value, consider booking a Bureau Veritas or SGS pre-shipment inspection. The inspector can include colour consistency sampling in the inspection scope, using their own calibrated equipment. Cost: approximately $300–600 for a standard one-day inspection in Xiamen.

6. Does colour consistency apply to handcrafted oil paintings?

For oil painting batches, the verification mechanism is different:

Photograph-based approval. Every piece photographed against a standard reference card (18% gray card) in controlled lighting. Client reviews photography and approves individual pieces that fall within the acceptable range. Pieces outside the range are repainted before shipment.

Typical variation range for oil paintings: ΔE 3–8 between individual pieces from the same reference, measured at close range. At normal hotel viewing distance (2–3 meters), this range is not visible to most guests. In corridors where multiple pieces hang in sequence, ΔE above 5 can become noticeable at the transition points.
